Gulu, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force has released a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of Otim Leon Joshua, a 16-year-old student who succumbed to injuries sustained in an assault incident on December 6, 2025.
According to police, Otim was allegedly assaulted by four individuals who suspected him of stealing a mobile phone in Lailong, Gulu City, at around 0400hrs.
He left his home earlier that day, informing his mother that he was going to town, but failed to return. At around 0500hrs, two boda boda riders brought him home, badly beaten and unconscious.
The riders informed Otim’s mother that her son had been assaulted, and she immediately rushed him to Lacor Hospital for medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, Otim passed away on December 9, 2025, at around midday.
A team of police officers responded to the incident, recording statements from the deceased’s mother and the two boda boda riders. The police investigation has confirmed that Otim’s death was a result of the assault.
However, police have denied allegations that Otim’s death was linked to a violent clash between police, military, and NUP supporters in Gulu City on December 6, 2025, stating that these claims are false and baseless.

The police have established that Otim was a student at Exel High School in Mukono and had returned home for the holidays to stay with his mother. Efforts are underway to apprehend the four suspects, who are currently at large.
“We assure the public that investigations are ongoing, and we are doing everything possible to ensure justice for the deceased and his family,” said the Uganda Police Force in a statement.
