In a surprising move, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka has rejected bills aimed at reforming Uganda’s electoral laws, just 10 months before the next elections.
This decision has sparked concern among lawmakers and civil society organizations, who have been advocating for electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections.
Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the Nyendo-Mukungwe representative in Parliament and Commissioner of Parliament, expressed disappointment with the Attorney General’s stance.
Mpuuga had written to the Speaker seeking leave to introduce bills for political and electoral reforms, but they have yet to be included on the Order Paper.
The Attorney General’s rejection of the bills has raised questions about the government’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has also taken a strong stance against the Attorney General, expelling him from its Council citing conflict of interest, professional misconduct, and failure to uphold judicial accountability.
As the country prepares for the next elections, the issue of electoral reforms is likely to remain a contentious topic.
