The Uganda Police Force has released a statement regarding violent incidents that occurred during campaign activities by the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate in Iganga District.
According to the police press release from the Police Headquarters, dated November 28, 2025:
- The NUP presidential candidate conducted campaign activities in Iganga District today.
- Deployed security forces faced attacks, including stone-throwing allegedly incited by the candidate, resulting in serious injuries to officers and damage to police vehicles.
- In response to the violence, officers dispersed unruly crowds, leading to one civilian fatality identified as Misaki Okello, an adult male.
- Several suspects linked to the violence have been arrested and are in police custody.
- The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns the violence and warns that confronting armed officers poses grave risks and will not be tolerated.
In contrast, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has disputed the police account. In a statement on his X account (formerly Twitter), Kyagulanyi expressed sadness over the incident and accused the police and military of attacking peaceful supporters leaving a rally in Iganga.
“I am very sad to announce that after a very successful rally in Iganga, the police and military attacked us yet again… fired live bullets at peaceful people and in the process killed at least one comrade and injured several others,” Kyagulanyi stated.
Kyagulanyi also alleged that police may have removed two other bodies from the scene and that several individuals, including Nuwamanya Samuel (24), Naminya Banuli (44), and Faima Namusobya (24), were severely injured and are receiving hospital treatment.
He condemned the actions of President Museveni’s regime.
Reports indicate that since Kyagulanyi’s campaigns began in the central region, police have used teargas to disperse his supporters on multiple occasions.
Critics, including human rights groups and the Uganda Law Society, have accused police of using excessive force and violating citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.
