The Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, which began at the start of the 3rd term.
The strike, which had seen most UPE schools closed for over a month, was called off following engagements with the Ministry of Public Service, Labor, and the Speaker of Parliament.
According to the UNATU General Secretary, Filbert Baguma, a meeting was convened on Thursday, October 16, 2025, for the National Executive Council and Branch Chairpersons.
The meeting, attended by five Members of Parliament representing workers, analyzed the progress of their petition to the Speaker’s chambers.
The union received a letter from the Minister of Public Service, Hon. Wilson Muruli Mukasa, dated October 8, 2025, acknowledging their petition.
Additionally, the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among, had written to the chairpersons of the Education and Sports Committee and the Public Service and Local Government Committee, directing them to work on the petition and provide feedback within two weeks.
In her letter, Speaker Among requested UNATU to resume work while the petition was being addressed, indicating that she was working on the issue on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni.
Accepting the negotiations, UNATU leaders suspended the strike until the negotiated period is concluded.
The suspension of the strike means teachers will return to class immediately. This decision comes after students had missed classes for 32 days, including those scheduled to sit for their Primary Leaving Examinations early next month.
The strike had also affected the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams, with the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) opting for private and retired teachers to invigilate the exams after arts teachers joined the strike.
