Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers’ Union (UPHTU) has issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding salary equity with their science counterparts.

During a press conference held today, the union’s representatives called for a pay raise within 90 days and inclusion in the salary allocation for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

The UPHTU, which represents government arts teachers, argued that the current salary disparity between arts and science teachers is unfair and demotivating.

They emphasized that arts teachers play a crucial role in the education system and deserve equal compensation.

“We are not asking for favors, but for fairness,” said a UPHTU representative. “Our members are highly qualified and dedicated professionals who deserve to be paid equally with their science counterparts.”

The union warned that if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, they will embark on a strike, with teachers laying down their tools.

This move, they cautioned, will disrupt the education sector and affect thousands of students.

The UPHTU’s demands come at a time when the government is finalizing the budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

The union is urging the government to prioritize the welfare of arts teachers and address the long-standing salary disparity.

The government has not yet responded to the UPHTU’s demands.

However, the union remains resolute in its pursuit of salary equity and is prepared to take industrial action if necessary.
