Mubende Municipality MP candidate Ismael Segawa, also known as Sureman Segawa, has come out in defense of Mubende Regional Referral Hospital’s average performance.
Segawa attributed the hospital’s challenges to its massive responsibility of serving seven districts, including Kasanda, Mityana, Kakumiro, Kyankwanzi, Kiboga, and Mubende, which inevitably leads to overcrowding.
Despite criticisms of unsatisfactory services, Segawa pointed out that the hospital’s resources are often stretched thin, with insufficient equipment and medicines to cater to the large patient population.
To address this issue, Segawa proposed the establishment of a district hospital to reduce overcrowding at the referral hospital and ensure better treatment for patients.
Segawa emphasized that if elected as MP for Mubende Municipality, his priority would be to advocate for a district hospital, especially in light of concerns that the Ministry of Health might transfer the regional referral hospital out of Mubende, leaving the district without a hospital.
Mubende Regional Referral Hospital faces numerous challenges, including frequent drug stockouts, inadequate infrastructure, and concerns over CT scan availability and fees.
Residents have expressed frustration with the hospital’s services, citing long queues and inadequate treatment. Notably, patients were previously charged Shs150,000 for the use of the CT Scan machine in private clinics near the referral hospital.
However, the hospital management recently restored the government-provided CT scan, which is expected to be free.
In response to these concerns, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, recently visited the hospital and warned doctors against neglecting their duties.
The hospital’s head, Dr. Batibwe Emmanuel, reported an increase in the number of doctors and beds, from 26 to 347.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Health has also launched a surveillance system, sent by the Regional Public Health Emergency Operations Center, to monitor districts including Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Mubende, Kasanda, Mityana, Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola.
This initiative aims to enhance the hospital’s performance and address the challenges it faces.
