Mubende, Uganda – Ismael Ssegawa, popularly known as Sureman Ssegawa, a renowned radio sports commentator and aspiring MP for Mubende Municipality, was forced into hiding on Thursday evening after police raided a local radio station where he was scheduled to appear.
Ssegawa had planned to address journalists at the National Unity Platform offices in Mubende, but police launched a raid on the area, blocking roads and trailing his vehicle.
According to Kyeyune Pafuladito, head of the National Unity Platform in Mubende, police cordoned off the radio station studios at around 5:30 pm and chased Ssegawa’s car in an attempt to arrest him. Ssegawa managed to escape using an alternative route.
Kyeyune reported that several of their party members were arrested around the newly constructed central market, and motorcycles were impounded.
“Some of those arrested include Kabody Muhammad, and Edgar’s motorbike was impounded. We are still gathering more information and plan to rescue them tomorrow at 11 am from the CPS,” Kyeyune added.
Ssegawa had recently expressed his interest in running for the Mubende Municipality MP seat on the National Unity Platform ticket.
During a debate on Point FM 105.1’s Cross Fire program, he promised to deliver better education, healthcare, and infrastructure development to the people of Mubende Municipality.
