NUP’s Alex Mufumbiro Denied Bail in Incitement Case Amidst Election Timeline

The National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson and Nakawa East parliamentary aspirant, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has applied for bail at the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he faces charges of inciting party supporters to murder security personnel in Kampala. Mufumbiro, who pleaded not guilty last month, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Frank Namanya to check on the progress of police investigations.

The court heard that the politician’s lawyers, Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa and Evans Ochieng, presented three sureties in support of the bail application: his wife Edith Katende, Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo, and his father, retired magistrate Moses Baligeya Mufumbiro.

However, the court remanded him to Luzira Prison until November 13, 2025, to allow Prosecutor Mahatma Odongo sufficient time to verify the documents submitted by his sureties.

This development comes as a challenge for Mufumbiro, given that all MP aspirants, including himself, are set to start the general election campaign on November 10th.

Mufumbiro had hoped to be out of prison by this time to fully participate in the campaigns, but it is becoming increasingly unlikely.

The charges against Mufumbiro stem from an alleged incident on September 4, 2025, where he incited NUP supporters to commit offenses against members of the Uganda security forces.

Mufumbiro’s lawyers argue that he is innocent of the charges and that the Nakawa magistrates’ Court has the powers to grant him bail.

Mufumbiro has been in detention since last month alongside nine other NUP members facing charges of conducting unauthorized military drills.

His case is set to be heard again on November 13, 2025, and November 18, 2025, at the Kanyanya Court for the other charges.
