The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced Florence Asio as its new flagbearer for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat, replacing Mercy Alupo.
This decision follows the High Court and Electoral Commission’s ruling last month to remove Alupo, along with Susan Norma Otai (FDC) and Akol Hellen Odeke, from the National Voters Register due to their non-registration as voters in Bukedea District.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi has condemned the move, alleging it was orchestrated to silence the voices of struggling women.
“How can Anita Among frustrate two of her contenders, manipulate the system, and still run as an independent candidate without any accountability?” Kyagulanyi questioned.
Asio, a respected community mobilizer and advocate for women’s empowerment, has promised to focus on improving education, healthcare, and youth empowerment if given the mandate.
Her announcement adds a new dynamic to Bukedea’s political contest, positioning NUP as a growing force in the region.
The development comes amid rising political tension in the district, with opposition candidates accusing security agencies and local authorities of intimidation, arrest, and voter manipulation.
NUP has called for an independent investigation into the deletion of Alupo from the voters’ register and the broader conduct of the Electoral Commission in the district.
