In a strongly-worded open letter, Kyamanywa Bob Richard, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Mubende Municipality and a key figure in the National Unity Platform (NUP), has urged Nabawanuka Sumaya, a fellow aspirant for the Mubende Municipality MP seat, to step aside and rethink her strategy.
The letter emphasizes the need for Nabawanuka to reconstruct her agenda in line with the NUP ideology.
According to Kyamanywa, Nabawanuka’s recent public statements and actions have raised concerns about her commitment to the party’s vision and principles.
He notes that despite their discussions around harmonization and reconciliation, Nabawanuka has continued to pursue a path that seems to be at odds with the party’s goals.
“Despite the current political terrain, I recently met with one of your aides-de-camp and we had discussions around harmonisation and reconciliation,” Kyamanywa writes.
Kyamanywa specifically points to Nabawanuka’s contradictory statements on radio, where she assured the electorate that she would not support any NUP aspirant who would be fronted to lead the team in the next general elections if she didn’t get the party flag.
However, just a short while later, another voice of hers assuring the electorate to support another candidate from a different party on the same MP position went viral.
“With these public confessions, in addition to the multiple blunders which have stirred up rage, disunity and a lack of sense of direction, you need to step aside, think again, and reconstruct your agenda in line with the National Unity Platform ideology,” Kyamanywa advises.
The letter also highlights Nabawanuka’s failure to abide by meeting resolutions, including a meeting in August 2023 where she was guided to restore the support the party had in the last election by contesting again for the Woman MP seat in Mubende District, which she contested in 2021.
Instead, she has opted to contest for the Mubende Municipality MP seat, creating confusion and division within the party.
Kyamanywa emphasizes that Nabawanuka needs to revisit the party’s vision and strategic direction to appreciate what the real cause of the party is all about.
“You seem to have lost track of your own vision, the strategic vision of the party and the original purpose which was intended to build synergy and serve our homeland,” he writes.
He concludes by expressing his openness to further discussions and reconciliation, stating, “We are still open to reconciliation. We are National Unity Platform.”
This comes at a time when the NUP is gearing up for a crucial contest in Mubende Municipality.
Kyamanywa, who previously contested for the seat in 2021 but lost, is vying for the position again.
However, the real challenge for both Kyamanywa and Nabawanuka comes in the form of Ismael “Sureman” Ssegawa, a prominent radio presenter who thrown his hat into the ring.
Ssegawa’s charisma and popularity in the area have made him a front-runner in the contest, and his ability to connect with the local community has earned him a significant following. With his strong grassroots support, Ssegawa is poised to give a tough fight to both Kyamanywa and Nabawanuka.

The party’s selection process for candidates is set to be highly competitive, with party cards being given out in early September.
According to the party’s guidelines, 60% of the decision on who gets the card will be based on grassroots support, making it crucial for aspirants to build strong connections with the local community.
Given Ssegawa’s existing popularity and connection with the community, he seems to have an edge over the other aspirants.
