In a surprising turn of events, Hajji Lubega Bashir Sempa, the incumbent MP of Mubende municipality in Mubende district, may face a tough road ahead in both the NRM primaries in 2025 and the general elections in 2026.
This comes after he lost in recent opinion polls conducted on local radio station 105.1 Point FM.
The opinion polls, held during the “Mulongooti” program hosted by Ronald Africa, saw listeners vote for their preferred candidate for the Mubende municipality MP seat.
Out of 128 votes cast, 20 were deemed invalid. The results showed Nabawanuka Sumayah from the National Unity Platform (NUP) leading the pack with 48 votes, followed by Masembe Deo Mujabi with 26 votes, and Lubega Bashir Sempa trailing behind with 16 votes.
The outcome of the opinion polls may indicate a shift in public opinion, with many voters seemingly dissatisfied with the incumbent MP’s performance.
Masembe Deo Mujabi’s strong showing, finishing 10 votes ahead of Lubega Bashir Sempa, suggests that the incumbent MP may face a challenge from within his own party in the upcoming NRM primaries.
In an apparent bid to boost his popularity, Lubega Bashir Sempa is preparing to distribute 13kg gas cylinders from Save Tree Gas to his municipality at a cost of 100,000 Ugandan shillings per cylinder.
However, the opinion polls suggest that he needs to do more to fulfill his promises to the constituency and prove himself as an effective MP.
The opinion polls, while not definitive, provide a glimpse into the mood of the electorate in Mubende municipality.
With several candidates already expressing interest in the MP seat, the stage is set for a competitive election season.
