Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake’s fair price event, organized by the Zaake-Zivuge Foundation, was sabotaged by police today, Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The event, aimed at providing affordable goods to the community, was scheduled to take place at Busimbi play grounds.
Zaake, a member of the National Unity Platform, a leading opposition party in Uganda, claimed that despite following all procedures and securing clearance, authorities revoked their approval, reportedly under pressure from “above” powers.
The event was not just about affordable goods; Zaake had also prepared a free medical camp to provide essential healthcare services to the community.
Additionally, he had planned to request Mityana residents to stand behind him as he seeks his party’s nomination to represent them in the 2026 general elections.
The fair price event was designed to offer goods at 50% off, making essential items more accessible to the local population.
“SABOTAGED BUT UNSTOPPABLE! 💪🏾” Zaake wrote on his Facebook page, highlighting the challenges his foundation faced. He added that the District Health Officer refused to clear the medical camp without lawful grounds, and police blocked the activity, advising him to seek permission from Museveni’s ministers of Health and Trade.
“We followed all procedures—notifying security at all levels and securing full clearance. But in a shocking turn of events, authorities revoked their own clearance,” Zaake stated.
This move is seen as part of a larger trend where opposition activities have faced blockages from Uganda security agencies, particularly the police and UPDF, since 2021.
Recently, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi blamed security agencies for being biased, saying, “Security agencies in Uganda have become partisan, consistently allowing ruling party activities while blocking opposition events. This selective application of the law undermines democratic principles and fairness.”
Zaake’s experience echoes Ssenyonyi’s concerns, as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has consistently been given freedom to hold its activities, while opposition events face obstacles.
Despite the sabotage, Zaake declared, “We went ahead with our Half Price Program in rob-dob style and starting this week, we are taking it village by village, parish by parish, all in preparation for the protest vote 2026”.
Zaake has a history of clashing with the government, having been arrested and tortured by police in 2020 for allegedly flouting Covid-19 guidelines. He was later awarded compensation for the torture.
