Kampala, Uganda – Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has released a statement detailing the alleged torture of his chief of security, Eddie Mutwe.

Today, Kyagulanyi visited Mutwe at Masaka Main Prison, accompanied by Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, Mutwe’s mother, wife, and eight-month-old baby.

According to Kyagulanyi, Mutwe was abducted by security operatives and taken to an unknown location, where he was subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse.

Kyagulanyi stated, “Eddie Mutwe is alive – that’s the only good news. He is in great pain.”

Mutwe allegedly told Kyagulanyi about the horrific treatment he endured, including electrocution, waterboarding, and physical beatings.

Mutwe described being flogged four times daily, given only one meal a day, and forced to drink dirty water containing traces of blood. He also claimed that he was forced to wear a T-shirt bearing President Museveni’s face, kneel down, and swear allegiance to the president and his son, Muhoozi Keinerugaba, while being recorded.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), had publicly confirmed Mutwe’s detention and posted a photo of him being tortured on his official X account, stating that Mutwe was “learning Runyankore”.

Mutwe was mocked and beaten for not knowing the language, with one operative asking him “Amagara?” (meaning “How is life?” in Runyakore) and beating him mercilessly when he responded in Luganda.

Mutwe’s condition is still severe, with Kyagulanyi adding, “He is only healing now, but he is still unable to walk unaided.”

Mutwe described his experience, saying, “It was like I had elephantiasis by the time I left that place.”

Kyagulanyi condemned the treatment of Mutwe, stating, “Eddie Mutwe should not be in jail.

He should be in a hospital. His colleagues too should not be in jail. They committed no offence.”
