In a thrilling conclusion to the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament by-election, independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano has been declared the winner, garnering 50,459 votes.

Ngabirano, who previously contested the NRM primaries, overcame a significant challenge from her rival, Rose Kabagyeni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who secured 44,982 votes.

The Kisoro District Returning Officer, Daniel Nayebare, announced Ngabirano’s victory at 1:44 am on Friday morning.

This outcome marks a significant upset, as Kabagyeni was considered a strong contender, having previously held the seat from 2016-2021.

    Election Results Breakdown:

_Grace Akifeza Ngabirano (Independent): 50,459 votes
    – Rose Kabagyeni (NRM): 44,982 votes
    – Sultana Salim Zubedi (NUP): 903 votes
    – Juliet Musanase (FDC): 193 votes
    – Mable Ingabire (UPC): 362 votes
    – Aisha Cyimpaye (PPP): 157 votes

Ngabirano’s victory is seen as a testament to her dedication to the people of Kisoro and her commitment to addressing the district’s pressing issues.

The by-election was held to fill the vacancy left by the late Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, who passed away on September 7, 2024.
