In a thrilling conclusion to the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament by-election, independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano has been declared the winner, garnering 50,459 votes.
Ngabirano, who previously contested the NRM primaries, overcame a significant challenge from her rival, Rose Kabagyeni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who secured 44,982 votes.
The Kisoro District Returning Officer, Daniel Nayebare, announced Ngabirano’s victory at 1:44 am on Friday morning.
This outcome marks a significant upset, as Kabagyeni was considered a strong contender, having previously held the seat from 2016-2021.
Election Results Breakdown:
_Grace Akifeza Ngabirano (Independent): 50,459 votes
– Rose Kabagyeni (NRM): 44,982 votes
– Sultana Salim Zubedi (NUP): 903 votes
– Juliet Musanase (FDC): 193 votes
– Mable Ingabire (UPC): 362 votes
– Aisha Cyimpaye (PPP): 157 votes
Ngabirano’s victory is seen as a testament to her dedication to the people of Kisoro and her commitment to addressing the district’s pressing issues.
The by-election was held to fill the vacancy left by the late Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, who passed away on September 7, 2024.
