The Ghanaian boxing scene is in mourning after the death of 32-year-old super middleweight Ernest Akushey, also known as Bahubali, 11 days after a bout in Accra.
As a precautionary measure, all boxing activities in the country have been suspended indefinitely.
Preliminary findings suggest Akushey’s death may be linked to internal injuries sustained during his September 12 fight against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The exact cause of death is still under investigation.
The National Sports Authority has described the suspension as “necessary” to protect the lives of athletes, maintain the integrity of the sport, and ensure its future.
A comprehensive five-year plan is being implemented to establish safer, more professional, and globally aligned standards for boxing in Ghana.
This incident is the second boxing-related death in Ghana within six months, raising concerns about safety protocols.
In March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically lost his life after collapsing during a fight in Accra.
Ghana has a rich boxing heritage, having produced legendary fighters like Azumah Nelson, a two-time world champion.
The suspension and planned reforms aim to prioritize athlete safety and restore the sport’s integrity.
As the boxing community comes to terms with this loss, the focus shifts to ensuring that necessary measures are in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
