Kampala, Uganda — The Electoral Commission, led by Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, met with the senior leadership of the Uganda Police Force, led by Director of Operations AIGP Frank Mwesigwa, to discuss security issues and conduct in the ongoing campaigns for the by-election in Kawempe North Division.
The meeting, held at the EC headquarters on 7th Street Industrial Area, focused on ensuring that all actors follow the law and guidelines issued by the Commission, avoid violent confrontations, and exercise maximum restraint.
This is to ensure that the people of Kawempe can choose their representatives in peace and security.
The meeting comes amid reports of violence, including the beating of NUP supporters and a top TV journalist, who is currently hospitalized.
The Commission and police are working to prevent further incidents and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Justice Byabakama, a seasoned lawyer and judge, has been leading the Electoral Commission since 2016.
He has emphasized the importance of following the law and guidelines to ensure a free and fair elections.
