The Electoral Commission (EC) has nullified the nomination of Ongelech Charles, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, for the Kachumbala County MP seat in Bukedea District.

The decision, communicated in a formal letter dated November 10, 2025, and signed by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, declares Isiagi Patrick Opolot unopposed for the seat.

The EC’s decision followed a petition filed by Atum George William, through M/s E. Wamimbi Advocates & Solicitors, challenging the authenticity of the signatures Ongelech submitted during nomination.

According to the petition, six out of ten required supporters – Atukei Anna Christine, Aolio Paul, Anyapa Robert, Asukan John Bosco, Malinga Brian, and Isimai Phillips – disowned the signatures attributed to them and swore affidavits affirming they had never supported or endorsed Ongelech’s candidature.

The EC found that Ongelech Charles had only four supporters out of the required ten, in contravention of Section 5.28(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap.177.

The commission’s decision was based on unchallenged affidavit evidence from the six witnesses, which led to the conclusion that Ongelech’s nomination was irregular.

Speaking to the press, Counsel Emmanuel Wamimbi, who represented the petitioner, said the ruling reinforces the importance of integrity in the electoral process.

“This decision underscores the need for candidates to adhere to the rules and regulations governing the electoral process,” Wamimbi said.

Patrick Opolot joins  the likes of Anita Among, Phionah Nyamutooro,  Thomas Tayebwa and others as unopposed candidates, mirroring the 1980 elections where DP candidates faced obstacles and UPC candidates dominated unopposed.
