Kampala, Uganda – Tragedy has struck Kampala, Uganda, as Barnabas, a boda boda rider who attempted to save the life of Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli, brother of Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura Omutatina, has passed away due to injuries sustained during the incident.

Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli, 34, a mobile money operator, was shot dead by gunmen on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at around 7:00 pm in Kiwatule Central Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala City.

During the scuffle, Barnabas tried to intervene but was shot by another armed assailant waiting nearby.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Tugume Albert was preparing to close his shop when he was attacked by an assailant intent on robbing him of his cash.

The main target, Mr. Tugume, attempted to flee but was pursued and fatally shot by the suspects, who made away with a bag believed to have contained an unspecified amount of cash.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police East Region is actively investigating the tragic robbery incident. Police investigators promptly arrived at the scene and recovered critical evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigation.

A vehicle, registration number UBH 045H, was found damaged by stray bullets.

The body of Mr. Tugume was transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination.

The family has announced that a church service for Mr. Tugume will be held, followed by the transportation of his body to Nyamabuga, Rugombe Town Council in Kyenjojo District for burial.

The family and friends of Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli and Barnabas are mourning the loss of two lives taken too soon.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, has appealed to the public to cooperate with the police to ensure that justice is served.
