John Nizeyimana Kamara, the Member of Parliament for Bufumbira North, has been arrested alongside three UPDF bodyguards and ten supporters over allegations of abduction and aggravated robbery targeting supporters of his political rival, retired Commissioner of Police Fortunate Gatera Habyara.

The arrests follow a series of violent electoral incidents reported on November 25, 2025, including the alleged abduction and assault of several individuals, among them police officers and civilians.
According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, two case files have been opened at Kisoro Central Police Station in connection with the incidents, including Aggravated Robbery and Abduction (Kisoro CRB 771/2025) and Aggravated Robbery (Kisoro CRB 770/2025).
The victims include PC Mandali Charles, attached to Nyarubuye Police Station; CPL Obworot Samuel, the Officer-in-Charge of Nyarubuye Police Station; and civilians Iragena Emmanuel and Nkaata Nicholas, who were allegedly assaulted, with Iragena reportedly abducted.
Police say PC Mandali’s firearm, allegedly stolen during the fracas, has been recovered and placed on exhibit. A mobile phone robbed from one of the civilian victims has also been recovered.
The arrested suspects include Kamara John Nizeyimana, Tukamushaba Onesmas, Ahaimbisa Decodmas, and Yesho Julius, all UPDF soldiers and bodyguards of Kamara, as well as several civilians.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed that all victims were rescued and taken to Kisoro Hospital for medical treatment.
Following the arrests, the Kisoro District Police Commander convened an emergency District Security Committee meeting to assess the security implications and determine the next steps regarding the detained legislator and his group. Investigations are ongoing.
Kamara recently lost the NRM primaries to Habyara, and the incidents are being investigated as part of a broader pattern of electoral violence.
