In a bold move, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, the presidential candidate of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has opened a new Western regional headquarters in Mbarara city.
This development comes on the heels of the party’s recent opening of an Eastern regional headquarters in Jinja.
The NUP, which rose to prominence in 2020 under Kyagulanyi’s leadership, has been gaining momentum ahead of the 2026 general elections.
With its headquarters in Makerere Kavule, the party has been expanding its regional presence, challenging the long-standing dominance of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The NRM, which has been in power for over 39 years, has traditionally relied on rented facilities for its regional operations. In contrast, the NUP’s strategic expansion into new regions, with its own headquarters, demonstrates the party’s commitment to establishing a strong grassroots presence.
In his speech, Kyagulanyi appealed to the people of Western Uganda to embrace change by voting for him.
As the elections draw near, President Museveni, 81, is set to seek a seventh term in office, with his campaign slogan “Protecting the Gains.”
Meanwhile, Kyagulanyi, 43, is positioning himself as a formidable challenger, having garnered significant support from Uganda’s youthful population.
The stage is set for a highly anticipated electoral contest, with the NUP’s growing presence and Kyagulanyi’s popularity posing a significant challenge to the NRM’s long-held grip on power.
