KAMPALA, UGANDA – Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, has stood firm in defense of his decision to visit the Akokoro burial site of former President Milton Obote, saying it was a deliberate move to promote generational unity and bring together young Ugandans with shared grievances.

Speaking on the NUP Podcast, Kyagulanyi explained that he was paying respects to Obote, a former President, and visiting his political ally Jimmy Akena, Obote’s son.
He emphasized that his actions were not about glorifying the past but about focusing on the future and bringing an end to President Museveni’s rule.
“I was not wrong to visit Obote’s grave. I would do it again,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that young people should not be prisoners of the past and that Ugandans should work towards a fairer and more inclusive society.
Kyagulanyi, who is Uganda’s biggest puller of spontaneous political crowds, shared personal experiences, revealing that his family members suffered under Obote’s rule.
His grandfather, Joseph Walakira, was a DP founder member who fought against Obote’s alleged tyrannical tendencies, and his father resisted Obote by aiding Museveni’s NRA bush war.
Despite these experiences, Kyagulanyi chose to focus on unity rather than dwelling on past conflicts. He dismissed criticisms as attempts to keep Ugandans divided and urged young people to focus on the bigger picture of ending Museveni’s rule.
The NUP President emphasized that his decision to visit Obote’s grave was not a mistake and that he was prepared to do whatever it takes to bring about change in Uganda.
He added that the ongoing campaign should be about achieving a fairer society, an inclusive and prosperous future for all children of Uganda, rather than remaining stuck on the country’s turbulent past.
Kyagulanyi’s visit to Obote’s grave sparked controversy, with some conservative Baganda and regime propagandists criticizing his actions.
However, Kyagulanyi remains resolute, emphasizing his commitment to generational unity and his determination to bring about change in Uganda.
He urged young Ugandans to coalesce around his generational candidature and work towards turning the tables on Gen Museveni come January 15th, rather than dwelling on trivial issues.
Kyagulanyi emphasized that it’s time to let bygones be bygones and focus on the future, adding that scare tactics will not deter him from his mission to bring about change in Uganda.
