A 28-year-old police officer, PC Chemonges Suleiman, was tragically killed by a mob while guarding the funeral of an inmate who died in police custody.
The incident occurred on April 6, 2025, in Ibanda District, Uganda.
The deceased inmate, 45-year-old Razaro Kahangire, was on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison, facing charges of attempted murder. He died while in custody, sparking widespread anger among residents.
During Kahangire’s burial, a grieving mob turned on PC Chemonges Suleiman, accusing the police of being responsible for the inmate’s death.
The mob attacked and killed the officer, who was attached to Bisheshe Police Station. Police responded to the scene, recovering an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, led by the Rwizi Regional Police command. In a significant development, 29 suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.
“We have since arrested 29 suspects connected to the murder and are continuing with the search for additional perpetrators,” said the police. “The Uganda Police Force condemns this violent act and assures the public that all those involved in this criminal act will be held accountable.”
PC Chemonges Suleiman’s body was taken to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The police are working to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for the officer’s death are brought to book.
