In a vocal opposition to President Yoweri Museveni’s regime, seasoned critic and Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has expressed skepticism about Museveni’s future as Uganda’s leader.

Lukwago believes that Uganda will experience a political shift, but unfortunately, this change won’t come through democratic elections.

Instead, he foresees a military takeover, with General Muhoozi Keinerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF), as the likely next president.

Lukwago’s concerns stem from General Muhoozi’s recent announcement that he won’t run in the 2026 general election. Lukwago doubts the sincerity of this statement, suspecting a hidden agenda to seize power before the elections.

“Those who still hope for elections in 2026 are dreaming. All signs point to a possible military capture of power before 2026,” Lukwago stated in an exclusive interview.

The Lord Mayor draws parallels between General Muhoozi and infamous authoritarian leaders, including Muammar Gaddafi, Benito Mussolini, Kim Jong Un, and Stalin.

Lukwago notes that Muhoozi, a self-proclaimed disciple of Gaddafi, received his first major army rank from the former Libyan strongman.

This, combined with Museveni’s claims that Bobi Wine’s NUP stole one million votes in the 2021 elections, leads Lukwago to conclude that the Museveni administration is eager to eliminate elections altogether.

Lukwago’s predictions are particularly significant given his background as a seasoned politician and lawyer.

As the Lord Mayor of Kampala since 2011, he has been a vocal critic of Museveni’s regime.
