NUP COUNCILOR’S SHOCKING BETRAYAL: BACKS NRM INCUMBENT MP IN MUBENDE

By Sekaggya Seka Moses

In a surprising move, Mayanja Samuel, a councilor from the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mubende, announced his support for incumbent NRM Woman MP, Nalongo Hope Grania, in the upcoming 2026-2031 term.

This declaration has left many opposition members in Mubende stunned and unhappy.

The controversy unfolded during a meeting held at the NUP party offices in Kirungi village, South Division, Mubende Municipal, where all aspiring NUP members gathered to discuss their candidacies.

Councilor Samuel’s announcement sparked heated debate among party members, with some expressing disappointment and concern.

Grania, who is currently serving her first term, is seeking re-election in 2026.

Despite NUP having several aspiring women candidates for the same position, Councilor Samuel has chosen to support the NRM incumbent.

Kanyike Slyver, an aspiring NUP mayoral candidate for East Division in Mubende, stated, “It’s high time for those who love change to be sober and not bring back individuals who don’t believe in change.”

The NUP top leadership has yet to comment on the matter, as they are still studying the situation.

Mubende district has been a stronghold of the NRM party for decades, with top leaders, including MPs and the district chairperson, consistently affiliating with the ruling party in every election.

However, as the opposition seeks to rally the people of Mubende to effect change and break the NRM’s nearly 40-year grip on power, a surprising twist has emerged.

Samuel Mayanja, a member of the opposition NUP party, publicly declared his support for incumbent NRM Woman MP Hope Grania, contradicting the opposition’s message of change and instead suggesting that NRM leadership is still needed in Mubende.

His move sparked confusion and controversy within the opposition ranks, as they strive to present a united front in their quest for power.
