Kampala, Uganda – In a dramatic turn of events, Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer in the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election, has filed a petition at the Electoral Commission demanding a vote recount.
The petition comes just hours after the Electoral Commission officially gazetted Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, as the winner of the by-election. Nalukoola was declared the winner with 17,939 votes, defeating Nambi who garnered 9,058 votes.
The gazetting of Nalukoola’s victory ends 11 days of tension in the NUP camp and paves the way for his swearing-in and formal entry into Parliament.
According to the Electoral Commission, Nalukoola’s victory was confirmed through the publication of his win in the Uganda Gazette on March 24, 2025.
“We’re now awaiting the swearing-in of our colleague so he can serve Kawempe North and Uganda at large,” said Joel Ssenyonyi, leader of the opposition and NUP spokesperson.
Ssenyonyi’s remarks signal the NUP’s confidence in Nalukoola’s victory and their expectation that he will soon take his seat in Parliament.
However, Nambi’s petition seeks to challenge the outcome of the election. Her initial tally was 8,593 votes, which was later revised to 9,058.
The reasons behind the revision are not yet clear, but the discrepancy has raised questions about the accuracy of the vote count.
The Electoral Commission has not yet commented on Nambi’s petition, but the development is likely to add a new twist to the already contentious by-election.
The commission is expected to review Nambi’s petition and make a ruling on whether to grant her request for a vote recount.
The outcome of Nambi’s petition and the subsequent actions of the Electoral Commission will determine the next steps in this ongoing saga.
Nambi belongs to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), a party that has held a 39-year grip on power in Uganda.
