KAMPALA, UGANDA – Capt. Mike Mukula, a veteran politician and former NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, has expressed concerns that his son Rodney Akongel Mukula, a candidate for Soroti City East MP, may have been poisoned, prompting an emergency evacuation from Soroti to Kampala.

Rodney was initially admitted to Doctors Plaza in Soroti, but his condition rapidly deteriorated, raising suspicions of poisoning. He was subsequently airlifted to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Mukula thanked the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for providing a military chopper to facilitate the urgent transfer. “I want to thank Gen. Muhoozi for his big heart. He immediately responded and provided a military chopper that picked up Rodney from Soroti to Mulago. We are grateful,” Mukula said.

The veteran politician revealed that he had discouraged his son from joining elective politics, citing the risks involved. “I did not want Rodney to join politics.

It took me over three, four months to dissuade him from going into politics,” Mukula said, adding that his son’s determination to serve his community ultimately led him to contest for the MP seat.

Mukula’s fears were reaffirmed as he witnessed his son’s struggles for life, stating, “To have seen him in this pain really vindicates me as I had told him politics is a very dangerous game. It’s full of intrigue, scheming and manipulation.”

Despite his initial reservations, Mukula has pledged to support his son’s decision to pursue a career in politics.

“As a parent, I have to support him. If your son wants to be a doctor, support him. If your son wants to be a priest, support him. If your daughter wants to be a nun, support her. For me as a parent, I have to support the influence and decisions of my son.”

Doctors at Mulago National Referral Hospital are closely monitoring Rodney’s condition as investigations continue into the cause of his sudden illness.
