Kampala, Uganda – Mr. Isaac K. Ssemakadde, President of the Uganda Law Society, has threatened to sue Next Media Group over a broadcast titled “BANG THE GOLD: RADICAL NEW GOLD SCAM” that aired on May 5, 2025.
In a letter dated May 6, 2025, addressed to Next Media boss Mr. Kin Kariisa, Ssemakadde’s lawyers, Mukiibi & Kyeyune Advocates, claim that the broadcast contained false, defamatory, and damaging allegations accusing him of conspiracy and fraud without substantiation.
The law firm writes, “We act on behalf of Mr. Isaac K. Ssemakadde, S.C., in connection with the broadcast… This #NBSInvestigates report contains false, defamatory, and damaging allegations against our client, accusing him of conspiracy and fraud without substantiation.”
The law firm outlines seven principal grievances and demands that Next Media Group takes immediate action to rectify the situation. The demands include:
- A full retraction and unqualified public apology
- Payment of $3 million (approximately UGX 11.4 billion) in compensatory and punitive damages
- Immediate cessation of further broadcasts or publications of the offending material
- Preservation of all relevant evidence
The letter states that Ssemakadde’s reputation, emotional well-being, and financial interests have been significantly harmed by the broadcast.
“To resolve this matter amicably and avoid litigation, our client demands the following within fourteen (14) days from receipt of this notice,” the letter reads.
The law firm warns that failure to comply with these demands within the stipulated period will lead to legal proceedings, seeking compensatory and punitive damages, injunctive relief, and a court-ordered retraction.
“We strongly encourage a prompt and cooperative resolution to avoid escalation,” the letter adds.
Next Media Group has not yet publicly responded to the demands. The matter is set to unfold in the coming days.
