On 20th November 2025, His Excellency Ambassador (Rtd) Col. Fred Mwesigye, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Uganda to Malawi, held a meeting with Mr. Solomon Bekele Debay, Chief Executive Officer of Malawi Airlines, at Malawi Airlines Headquarters in Lilongwe.
The engagement marked a significant step in advancing diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Ambassador Mwesigye was accompanied by Ms. Doreen Atwiine, Financial Attache at the High Commission, Rev. Fr. David Nuwagaba, the Chairperson of Uganda Community in Malawi and Mr. Martin Isyagi.
The Malawi Airlines delegation included Mr. Charles Ng’ambi, Head of Commercial, and Ms. Only Taulo, Marketing Officer.
During the discussions, Malawi Airlines confirmed that it will commence flights between Lilongwe and Entebbe on 15 December 2025, operating four flights per week.
The new route is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and serve both the Ugandan community in Malawi and the Malawian community in Uganda.
The CEO of Malawi Airlines expressed profound appreciation to the Government of Uganda for its cooperation in facilitating regulatory clearance, noting that the development supports the airline’s strategic regional expansion efforts.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mwesigye said he was “extremely excited that Malawi Airlines will be operating in Uganda,” adding that “part of my mandate is to promote business between our two nations and strengthen bilateral ties. Increased connectivity will ultimately foster integration and economic growth.”
The launch of the Lilongwe–Entebbe route represents a milestone in ongoing efforts to enhance people-to-people interaction and economic exchange between Uganda and Malawi.
Both parties expressed optimism that the new air link will deepen commercial collaboration, tourism, and investment.
