    Tragic Lightning Strike Hits Kassanda District, 14-Year-Old Student Killed, 6 Injured

    Kassanda, Uganda – November 8, 2024 – A devastating lightning strike hit Kalwana Primary School in Kassanda District yesterday, resulting in the tragic death of a 14-year-old student and injuring six others.

    The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 pm during a rainstorm, when lightning struck a primary three classroom through a window.

    The students were in class with their teacher, Alinyikira Sarah Mugenyi, at the time of the strike.

    The deceased student has been identified as Namawejje Jackline, a 14-year-old primary three pupil and biological daughter of Mawejje Baker, a resident of Mpologoma LC1, Lwangiri Parish, Kalwana Sub County, in Kassanda District.

    Six other students were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at Lwanjiri Health Center III and Kassanda Health Center. The injured victims include:

    – Naiga Sarah, 13, primary three pupil
    -Namaganda Scovia, 10, primary three pupil
    -Navuga Mary, 13, primary four pupil

    -Nalubega Prossy, 13, primary three pupil

    -Nabankema Joan, 14, primary three pupil

    -Ntuuyo Roden, 13, primary three pupil

    Lightning strikes can cause serious injuries, including:

    – Head injuries
    – Spinal cord damage
    – Heart problems
    – Burns
    – Long-term health issues

    The police spokesperson for the Wamala Region, SP Kawala Racheal, confirmed the incident and stated that a postmortem was conducted.

    The body was  handed over to the relatives for a decent burial.

    The territorial police in Kassanda  registered the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
