Isingiro South legislator Alex Bakunda was forced to present himself to Rwizi Region police detectives after evading summons related to ordering his gang to break into Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary and steal a body.
Incident Details
A detective revealed that Bakunda’s gang, including his ambulance driver, was arrested at MRRH while attempting to collect another body, that of a man killed in mob justice.
Investigations showed that the gang attacked hospital staff, injuring John Okello with a panga, and intercepted a middle-aged woman’s body in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward.
The hospital administration, outraged by the incident, assisted the assaulted staff in opening a case of threatening violence against Bakunda’s gang under SD REF NO. 87/18/10/2024.
Police Investigation
Rwizi Region Police Spokesman Samson Kasasira confirmed the incident, stating that Bakunda used his MP status to evade capture until Thursday afternoon.
Bakunda and his men were briefly arrested and bonded out but are expected to report to police regularly.
