Kampala, Uganda – In a harrowing tale of survival and resilience, celebrated author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has revealed the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his escape to exile.
Rukirabashaija, who fled Uganda after facing persecution and harassment, recounted his perilous journey in a poignant and introspective account.
According to Rukirabashaija, he evaded surveillance around his Kampala home, employing a clever tactic to throw off his pursuers.
“I left my phone behind to confuse them that I was in the house licking my wounds like a bruised dog,” he explained. With his escape plan in motion, Rukirabashaija navigated a treacherous 2km-long swamp, relying on the cover of shrubs, croaking frogs, and other water creatures to conceal his escape.
After being rescued on the other side, Rukirabashaija made his way to the German Embassy, where he was assisted in obtaining a passport and visa.
In a remarkable display of kindness, embassy officials helped Rukirabashaija secure the necessary documents, paving the way for his safe passage to Germany.
Rukirabashaija’s account is a testament to his courage and determination in the face of adversity.
His experience has inspired a forthcoming book, “Bitter Bread of Exile,” for which he has chosen a poignant photograph taken shortly after his arrival in Germany.
The photograph, taken by a kind-hearted photographer who has since become a source of comfort and support, serves as a powerful reminder of Rukirabashaija’s journey and the kindness of strangers.
The photographer, who Rukirabashaija describes as having a “large forehead and curvaceous bottom with sugarcane-shaped legs, long protruding rusty teeth and exuberant hair on her head,” showed remarkable concern for the author’s well-being.
Upon noticing Rukirabashaija’s injuries, she asked about his condition, but he remained tight-lipped about his experiences.
In a remarkable display of dedication, the photographer continued to reach out to Rukirabashaija via email, sending him dozens of messages over the course of nearly three years. Despite her unwavering commitment, Rukirabashaija never responded to her emails – until Thursday, November 28, 2024, when he finally replied to her via email.
The photographer’s response was immediate, expressing her relief that Rukirabashaija was alive and her concern that she had thought he had died from his injuries.
Rukirabashaija has expressed his gratitude for the photographer’s kindness and commitment, citing her as an inspiration for his healing journey.
