    PRESIDENT KAGUTA APPOINTS NEW MAKERERE UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR

    President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University.

    Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, welcomed Dr. Kiyonga, saying, “On behalf of the Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University.”

    Dr. Kiyonga replaces Professor Ezra Suruma, who has served two terms since 2016 as the Makerere University Chancellor.

    Who is Dr. Crispus Kiyonga?

    Dr. Kiyonga was born in Kasese District in western Uganda on January 1, 1952. He attended Bwera Primary School from 1959 to 1966 and then Nyakasura School from 1967 to 1970.

    He completed his secondary education at King’s College Budo from 1971 to 1972.

    Dr. Kiyonga earned his first medical degree, the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), from Makerere University School of Medicine in 1978.

    Later, in 2004, he obtained a Master of Health Science (MHS) with a specialization in Population Dynamics from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

    Dr. Kiyonga’s Political Career

    Dr. Kiyonga entered politics in 1980, winning a seat in parliament representing Bukonzo County West on the Uganda Patriotic Movement platform.

    He joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from 1981 to 1986.

    After NRM assumed power in 1986, Dr. Kiyonga held various cabinet and non-cabinet posts:

    Minister for Cooperatives & Marketing (1986), Minister of Finance (1986-1992), credited with establishing the Uganda Revenue Authority, Minister of Internal Affairs (1994-1996).

    Minister of Health (1996-2001), successfully handling the 2000 Ebola outbreak in Gulu and Chairman of the Global Fund, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the President and National Political Commissar (2001-2006), Minister of Defense (2006-2016)

    Between 1992 and 1994, Dr. Kiyonga consulted for the World Bank and African Development Bank. He returned to politics in 1994, serving in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Uganda Constitution.

    In 2016, Dr. Kiyonga was appointed Uganda’s Ambassador to China.

    Dr. Kiyonga’s extensive experience and leadership skills will guide Makerere University in its future endeavors.
