Kampala, Uganda – Pastor Martin Ssempa of Makerere Community Church has alleged that he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt over the weekend, heightening concerns for his safety.
Ssempa, a vocal opponent of homosexuality legalization in Uganda, revealed earlier that unknown individuals had been trailing him, prompting fears for his life.
On Saturday, Ssempa reported that six men in two vehicles ambushed him while he was engaged in construction work at his Kasanje home. He managed to escape unharmed.
The pastor suspects the attack may be linked to either military personnel collaborating with land grabbers or individuals angered by his anti-homosexuality stance.
Ssempa’s activism has made him a target for those supporting LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda.
Following the incident, Ssempa reported the matter to the Police, who assigned two escorts for his protection.
In a social media post, Ssempa shared his ordeal and appealed for increased security:
“I survived two attempted assassinations today… I narrowly survived death today. Suspect it’s either military-related land grabbers or perverts.”
Ssempa has requested prayers and heightened security measures from his followers and authorities.
The Police have initiated an investigation into the alleged assassination attempt.
