Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has sounded a warning to those in power, stating that they will try to denigrate opposition voices, but urged colleagues to wear the label of “disruptive” with pride if it means standing up for fairness.
Speaking at a workshop on opposition alternative priority areas at Parliament, Ssenyonyi emphasized the importance of demanding responsibility and speaking up for the people of Uganda. “If we do not speak up for the people of Uganda, then who will?” he asked.
Ssenyonyi also highlighted the crippling effects of corruption on the nation’s progress. “Corruption remains the single biggest roadblock to our nation’s progress.
Year after year, Ugandans are told that resources are scarce, yet we continue to see trillions lost to mismanagement, inflated contracts, and outright theft.”
The Leader of Opposition revealed that the coming 2025/26 Alternative Budget will focus on the fight against corruption, as this is the biggest threat to Uganda’s progress.
He noted that Ugandans are often denied critical services due to claimed lack of funds, while reports of stolen public funds are rampant.
Ssenyonyi made these remarks while addressing the Opposition Caucus during the discussion of the Alternative Priority Areas for FY 2025/2026 at Parliament.
This year’s Opposition budgeting process is centered on the theme, “Combating Corruption: The Sure Way to Effective Service Delivery”.
The Leader of Opposition also urged MPs to continue speaking out against corruption, despite the name-calling and negativity that will come with their vocalness.
He emphasized that their duty is not only to challenge the government but to offer real solutions.
Ssenyonyi informed the Opposition Caucus that unlike the several meetings held as a Caucus, the workshop is not just another meeting, but rather an opportunity for the Opposition to pause, reflect, and strategize on how best to fulfill its responsibilities.
“This theme speaks directly to the core of Uganda’s most pressing challenges. Corruption remains the single biggest roadblock to our nation’s progress.
Year after year, Ugandans are told that resources are scarce, yet we continue to see trillions lost to mismanagement, inflated contracts, and outright theft.
These are not just abstract figures. They represent stolen opportunities for our children, our communities, and our future,” remarked Ssenyonyi.
The workshop, attended by opposition MPs, aimed to strategize on how to effectively fulfill their responsibilities.
Ssenyonyi urged participants to prioritize offering solutions to Uganda’s pressing challenges.
The opposition’s alternative budget for the 2025/26 financial year will prioritize the fight against corruption.
Ssenyonyi’s remarks come as the opposition prepares to unveil its budget, guided by the theme, “Combating Corruption: The Sure Way to Effective Service Delivery”.
