Ismael Ssegawa, popularly known as Sureman Segawa, has officially confirmed his bid for the Mubende Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) seat on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Ssegawa submitted his expression of interest forms at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters who traveled from Mubende to accompany him.
Ssegawa, a rising political figure with roots in grassroots activism, has been involved in various community-led initiatives across Mubende Municipality.
He emphasized the importance of working for the people and pledged to champion grassroots voices in parliament.
“Let this not be my journey, but ours—For Mubende Municipality that works.
For a future we can all believe in,” he said, calling on the people of Mubende Municipality to join him on this journey.
When asked about doubts over his capability to hold the position, Ssegawa laughed it off, pointing to the successful submission of his nomination papers.
He thanked his fans who were able to accompany him and encouraged those who could not but would like to accompany him.
“It is not uncommon for candidates to set up a car and pay for it and tell people to come and go elsewhere and they come in big numbers but those two buses you saw our people accompanying us from Mubende no one we paid and I want to assure them that they don’t give up next time will be much bigger when we join those that were unable,” he said.
Ssegawa’s entourage, including prominent NUP leaders in Mubende, expressed their support and happiness over the acceptance of his nomination papers. Frank Mazinga, one of Ssegawa’s supporters, praised him for his strength and commitment to the people of Mubende.
“Sureman Segawa was returning his papers, we walked as Mubende people from three divisions, accompanied by our MP, the vibe was very good along the way we walked well, people went in big numbers a full coster bus with a taxi and other cars without Him paying for anyone, not only in Mubende Municipality but also, Kampala Segawa is a strong man,” Mazinga narrated.
Another supporter, Semuga, added, “We came to accompany our MP because he is the one we trust as Mubende people and the situation is tense here because of his powers, Mubende people decided to take two transport buses some of them we left them in Mubende, they wanted to join us but the seats was not enough for all of us and we are ready to protect our vote.”
Ssegawa’s campaign promises to focus on key areas such as education, youth employment, community health, and transparency in service delivery.
Well, Andrew Walubi, a fellow contender who stepped aside to support Ssegawa and has now come in for the position of Mayor of Mubende Municipality, also submitting his papers, cited the need to avoid controversy and ensure that the people of Mubende receive the services they deserve.
“National Unity platform was never given a chance in Mubende Municipality but this time because of the strength we have as youths because we represent people’s issues I Andrew Walubi and Sureman Segawa my brother I want to hand over the issues of Mubende Municipality so that he brings them to parliament,” Walubi said.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Kawuma Charles, Mayor of East Division Mubende Municipality, Mayanja Samuel, Councilor for East Division, and Kabali Harunah, NUP Registrar for Mubende, among other aspiring councilors in Mubende district.
With the backing of his community and party leaders, Ssegawa’s entry into the race signals a new wave of candidates determined to return public service to the people.
His campaign is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the MP seat, prioritizing the needs and concerns of the grassroots.
