KAMPAKYA, UGANDA – In a show of strong party unity, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been re-elected as the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

The re-election comes after a delegates’ election held at the NUP School of Leadership in Kamwokya, a Kampala City suburb.

The election, which was organized by the party’s Elections Management Committee, saw Kyagulanyi retain his position as party President.

David Lewis Rubongoya was confirmed as the Secretary General, while Joel Ssenyonyi was elected as the party’s Spokesperson on the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Bobi Wine’s rise to prominence in Ugandan politics has been nothing short of remarkable.

His journey began with a surprise win in the Kyadondo East by-election in 2017, where he abruptly entered the scene and secured a decisive victory, becoming a member of the 10th Parliament.

This initial success marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in Ugandan politics.

In the 2021 elections, Bobi Wine made a strong showing in the presidential race, garnering 3,631,437 votes.

Although he came in second to incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who secured 6,042,898 votes, Bobi Wine’s performance was widely regarded as a significant achievement, given his relatively new status in politics.

    Bobi Wine’s Impact

Bobi Wine’s entry into politics was marked by his courage and determination to challenge the status quo.

As a musician and activist, he leveraged his popularity to mobilize support for his cause, advocating for democratic reforms and human rights.

His charisma and authenticity resonated with many Ugandans, particularly the youth, who saw him as a breath of fresh air in a country dominated by Museveni’s long-standing rule.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Bobi Wine remained steadfast in his pursuit of change.

His commitment to peaceful protest and his willingness to engage with the electoral process have earned him widespread recognition as a leader.
