Mzee Nathan Okori, the father of the late Speaker of Parliament Jacob L’okori Oulanyah, has passed away at the age of 97.
The news was confirmed by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, who had earlier paid tribute to Oulanyah on the fourth anniversary of his passing.
Oulanyah, a seasoned politician, agricultural economist, and lawyer, served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament for 10 years before being elected Speaker in 2021.
He defeated Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga in a closely contested election on May 24, 2021, to become the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda. Oulanyah represented Omoro County constituency in Acholi sub-region and was a prominent figure in Uganda’s Northern Region.
He succumbed to illness on March 20, 2022, while receiving specialized medical care in a hospital in the United States, just three days shy of his 57th birthday.
