Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu known as Bobi Wine has submitted his expression of interest forms to contest for the presidency of Uganda under the National Unity Platform (NUP) banner.

This move sets the stage for another showdown with incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades.

Kyagulanyi’s journey from musician to politician is a remarkable one. He initially gained fame as a musician before venturing into politics.

In 2017, he won a by-election in Kyadondo East constituency as an independent candidate under the People Power movement.

His charismatic leadership and impassioned speeches resonated with many Ugandans, particularly the youth.

In 2020, Kyagulanyi founded the National Unity Platform (NUP), a political party that aimed to challenge Museveni’s long-standing rule.

As the party’s president, he spearheaded the 2021 general elections campaign, mobilizing millions of Ugandans in a spirited bid to unseat the incumbent president.

In the presidential election held on January 14, 2021, Museveni secured 6,042,263 votes, while Kyagulanyi garnered 3,631,437 votes.

Despite the outcome, Kyagulanyi’s NUP made significant inroads in the parliamentary elections, winning over 50 seats in the Buganda region alone.

The party’s MPs from Buganda include prominent figures who have been vocal about democratic reforms and human rights.

Kyagulanyi’s resilience and determination captured the world’s attention, symbolizing the struggle for democracy and freedom in Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni has been at the helm of Ugandan politics for nearly 40 years, with a rule marked by controversy and repression.

At 81, he is expected to pick up nomination forms from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party on June 28 to contest for another term.

Museveni’s long-standing rule has been characterized by human rights abuses, electoral fraud, and suppression of opposition voices.

With Kyagulanyi having submitted his forms of interest, accompanied by his wife Barbara Kyagulanyi, children, and other family members and friends, the stage is set for another intense showdown with President Museveni in the 2025 presidential election.
