In a surprise move, Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry) and incumbent MP for Ndorwa West, David Bahati, has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections.
This decision comes despite his loss in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primary elections held in July 2025.
Bahati, who is also the Kabale district NRM chairman, made the declaration on Sunday while addressing party leaders and supporters at the district offices.
He lost the primary to Kampala-based lawyer Eliab Naturinda Mporera, who garnered 25,027 votes (50.9%) to Bahati’s 23,759 votes (48.3%).
However, Bahati has disputed the outcome, citing irregularities, and claims to have made his decision after wide consultations.
Despite opting to run as an independent candidate, Bahati urged his supporters to back President Museveni while mobilizing votes for him in the 2026 elections.
