Mugerwa Ronald Saaku, the Probation and Welfare Officer at Lugazi Municipality, has been charged with Obtaining Money by False Pretense and Conspiracy to Defraud.
He was arraigned before the Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded in custody until October 21, 2025.
According to court documents, Saaku allegedly conspired with Dr. Wataba Saadi, the Lugazi Municipal Medical Officer, and Sekikubo Mubarak, an LCIII representative from Nakisunga Sub-County, to defraud Dr. Mukisa George William, a job applicant, of UGX 38 million.
The officials purportedly claimed they could secure Dr. Mukisa a government job as a Medical Officer in Mukono District by using the money to “facilitate” members of the Mukono District Service Commission.
The case was reported to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) on July 7, 2025, by a whistleblower who revealed irregularities in the recruitment process, including bribery and solicitation of funds from applicants.
Authorities are investigating other instances of alleged corruption involving the accused officials and commission members.
This arrest follows warnings from the President to District Service Commissions across Uganda to ensure transparency in public service recruitment and act against the illegal sale of government jobs.
This case sparked public outrage, with many calling for stronger oversight of recruitment processes to prevent exploitation of job seekers and restore trust in government institutions.
Criminal summons have been issued for Dr. Wataba Saadi, who is currently at large. The investigation is ongoing.
