Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of Kampala City has inspected the newly constructed Busega market, which has been marred by workspace allocation and administration controversies.
During his tour of the market, Lukwago received mixed concerns from traders, with some complaining of being left out and others, such as fishmongers, having no proper space.
The Lord Mayor’s inspection of the market was aimed at assessing the progress of the construction project and addressing the concerns of the traders.
Lukwago reiterated his call for all traders reallocated from the old market to be prioritized and given stalls in the new market. He emphasized that these traders “own this market” and should be given the necessary support.
Lukwago also implored the traders to be vigilant in market matters, especially its administration. He advised them to harmonize their leadership with the presidential directive on markets and ensure that those they elect are people-centered.
This, he believes, will help to promote the interests of the traders and ensure that the market is managed efficiently.
The New Busega market was constructed by the government of Uganda under the Ministry of Local Government, with construction commencing in 2015.
The project was funded jointly by the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme (MATIP) and the Arab Bank of Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).
The completion of the market is expected to provide a modern and conducive trading environment for the vendors.
However, the controversies surrounding the allocation of stalls and the administration of the market threaten to undermine the benefits of the project.
The Lord Mayor’s intervention is aimed at resolving these issues and ensuring that the market serves the interests of all stakeholders.
