A shocking incident unfolded at the Town Council headquarters in Lwengo District, where a physical altercation broke out between Lwengo Woman MP, Hon. Cissy Namujju, and the area LC 3 Chairperson, Mary Madah Nanyanzi.
The confrontation took place during the inauguration of a new Town Council complex, a 3-story building funded by the President through the Finance Ministry.
The event was meant to be a celebration of the new infrastructure, but it quickly turned chaotic when supporters of Namujju praised her for lobbying for the project, which Nanyanzi’s supporters disputed, claiming it was Nanyanzi’s achievement as the Kyazanga Town Council Mayor.
The disagreement escalated into a heated argument, which eventually turned violent. Nanyanzi attacked Namujju, slapping her repeatedly, claiming that she had lobbied for the government project worth over 1 billion shillings.
Namujju fought back, throwing punches that left Nanyanzi’s face swollen and bruised.
Lwengo RDC Emmy Katera Turyabagyenyi intervened, physically separating the two women and preventing further violence.
Namujju was evacuated to a nearby health center, while Nanyanzi was dragged away by Turyabagyenyi.
Lwengo district chairman Abdul Kitata has dismissed both Namujju and Nanyanzi as liars, stating that neither of them had any involvement in the Shs1.4bn project.
Kitata claimed that he personally lobbied for the project from the President, which explains why the district council, which he heads, has been doing and monitoring everything.
Nanyanzi accused Namujju of being against the physical infrastructure development of Kyazanga Town Council in favor of Lwengo Town Council from where she anticipates more votes.
She claimed Namujju never contributed anything because she wanted the same project to be channeled to Lwengo Town Council which she has always favored.
The altercation highlights the intense rivalry and tension between politicians in Uganda, particularly within the ruling NRM party.
As the 2026 elections approach, such incidents may become more frequent, potentially benefiting opposition parties like Robert Kyagulanyi’s NUP.
The opposition party has been gaining popularity, especially among the youth, and incidents like this may further boost their support.
The police have promised to investigate the incident and take action against those found culpable. However, many are skeptical about the outcome, given the involvement of high-ranking politicians.
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety and security of politicians, especially women, in the country.
This sparked a debate about the need for politicians to maintain a level of decorum and respect, even in the face of disagreement.
As one observer noted, “Politicians should be role models, not fighters. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and should be condemned by all.”
