Kampala, Uganda – January 7, 2025 – In a dramatic turn of events, the General Court Martial at Makindye Military Barracks sentenced city lawyer Eron Kiiza to 9 months in prison for contempt of court.
Kiiza, who represents opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, was found guilty of “gross professional misconduct” for banging on metal surfaces and shouting in court despite warnings.
The incident occurred during a hearing in Besigye’s trial, where he faces charges related to security and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Kiiza was thrown into the caged dock alongside his clients Besigye and Obeid Lutale, and was later brought back to the court handcuffed after the lunch adjournment.
Fellow defence lawyer Samuel Muyizi alleged that Kiiza had been tortured during the break, suffering a dislocated arm and attempted strangulation by military personnel.
Kiiza’s sentence was passed without a trial, sparking concerns over the conduct of the military court and its treatment of legal professionals.
Critics argue that the military court has no jurisdiction to try civilians and that military men treat civilians like military personnel when in the court martial.
This incident highlights a recurring pattern of difficulties faced by lawyers representing clients before the General Court Martial.

In similar cases, lawyers Erias Lukwago and Caleb Alaka were arrested for 7 hours and convicted of contempt in 2004, while City lawyer Jimmy Muyanja was indefinitely suspended in 2018.
The sentencing of Kiiza without a hearing has been met with outrage from his colleagues, with lawyers Erias Lukwago and Fredrick Mpanga appealing the decision.
Kiiza will serve his 9-month sentence at Kitalya Government Prison. Meanwhile, Besigye and Lutale have been remanded until January 13 for further mention of their case.
