Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, leader of the National Unity Platform, has strongly condemned the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye, former leader of the Forum for Democratic Change.
Dr. Besigye’s disappearance and alleged abduction from Kenya has sparked widespread concern, with his family revealing that he was taken from Nairobi and is believed to be held in military detention in Uganda.
“The news of the disappearance and abduction of Dr. Kiiza Besigye from Kenya is of greatest concern,” Kyagulanyi stated.
“This is most unfortunate! A few months ago, 36 other activists were abducted from Nairobi and brought back to Uganda in utter violation of the law.”
Kyagulanyi emphasized the need for Dr. Besigye’s immediate release, saying, “As we call for his immediate release, we condemn this blatant abuse of the law by the regime here in Uganda, and sadly the authorities in Kenya.”
He also drew parallels with past incidents, noting, “We are back to the dark days when Ugandans were casually picked from the streets of Nairobi and returned to Uganda to be tortured, jailed and others executed.”
Furthermore, Kyagulanyi stressed, “The abduction of Ugandan citizens from Kenya and handing them over to the regime in Uganda without following extradition laws must be condemned by all people of good conscience!”
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, has been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
