Kampala, Uganda – The devastating aftermath of the Kiteezi landfill landslide has claimed another life, with the discovery of a pregnant woman’s body, bringing the death toll to 13.
Rescue teams, combing through the rubble and debris, made the grim discovery earlier today.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly eight months pregnant.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rains on August 10, buried several homes and scavengers under a massive pile of garbage.
Rescue efforts have been ongoing, but the challenging terrain and inadequate machinery have hindered progress.
President Yoweri Museveni has extended condolences to the families of the victims and offered financial support.
“I have also directed the State House Comptroller to financially assist the families of those who died with Shs5million per person who died and Shs1 million per person who was injured,” he said.
The government has also pledged to relocate families living near the landfill and provide alternative livelihoods for those affected.
As the search for more survivors continues, the nation mourns the loss of lives and hopes for a swift recovery for the injured.
