Nairobi, Kenya – A shocking incident unfolded at the gates of State House, Kenya’s presidential residence, on Monday morning, leaving one police officer dead and raising concerns about security lapses.
Police Constable Ramadhan Khamisi Matanka, assigned to the General Service Unit (GSU), was fatally injured in a bow-and-arrow attack by a 56-year-old man who allegedly disguised himself as a homeless person.
The attacker, identified as Kinyuka Kinyumi, approached the gate around 8:15 am, posing as a member of the street families and carrying a sack concealing the bow and arrow.
As officers screened vehicles entering State House, Kinyumi drew the bow and shot PC Matanka in the ribs after being ordered to surrender.
The officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The suspect was quickly subdued and arrested by other officers at the scene. He claimed to have been directed by Satan to carry out the attack.
The motive behind the assault is still under investigation, with authorities working to determine if there were any security breaches.
Investigation and Aftermath
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
The National Police Service has condemned the attack, commending the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm.
“We condemn this heinous act and commend the officers for their bravery,” said police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga. He extended condolences to PC Matanka’s family, noting that the officer had “paid the ultimate price in the line of duty”.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has taken note of the incident, with chairperson Issack Hassan pointing to a series of incidents at State House, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and Kiganjo Police Station.
PC Matanka’s body has been moved to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
