Nairobi, Kenya – The security detail assigned to High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi has been withdrawn, effective immediately, sparking concerns over judicial independence.
The move comes just three days after Judge Mugambi sentenced Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to six months in prison for contempt of court.
Judge Mugambi had previously raised concerns about being surveilled by police officers, prompting the assignment of a security detail.
Senior police officers, including Commandant Lazarus Opicho, had made inquiries about Mugambi’s whereabouts, contacting his driver and bodyguard.
Opicho later apologized, stating that the calls were made out of genuine concern for the judge’s security following the shooting of a magistrate at Makadara Law Courts.
The withdrawal of Judge Mugambi’s security has drawn criticism from the judiciary and legal fraternity.
“The withdrawal of security for Judge Mugambi is a direct assault on judicial independence and a violation of the principles enshrined in the Constitution,” said Chief Justice Martha Koome.
The Law Society of Kenya and the Defenders Coalition have also condemned the incident, citing concerns over intimidation and the rule of law.
“The National Police Service must immediately restore Judge Mugambi’s security and fulfill their constitutional obligations,” Chief Justice Koome added.
