Kampala, Uganda – Today marks 31 years since Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II ascended to the throne of Buganda.
In a historic address, the Kabaka spoke to a congregation gathered at Namirembe Cathedral via Zoom from his kingdom at Mengo.
Although the Kabaka is still undergoing treatment and was unable to attend the ceremony in person, he expressed his gratitude to God for his life and the treatment he has received from medical professionals, both locally and internationally.
The Kabaka thanked Bishop Moses Bbanja and other religious leaders for their prayers and support, and emphasized the importance of unity and respect for traditional norms.
He encouraged his people to come together and protect the norms of Buganda, warning against those who seek to undermine the kingdom.
The Kabaka also reminded his people of the following key principles:
- We acknowledge the Kabaka’s adherence to the established protocols and norms that precede his ascension to the throne, and note that his selection is overseen by specialized Bataka, who are well-known and aware of their responsibilities, rather than being vetted by the Bataka leaders.
- The Kabaka’s leadership is exemplified by his wise decision-making, as evidenced by his selection of the Katikiro, who assists him in governing the kingdom.
- We applaud the Kabaka’s visionary approach to adapting traditions to suit the needs of the modern era, while maintaining the essence of Buganda’s cultural identity.
The Kabaka specifically thanked the youths for their support, and also expressed his gratitude to the people living abroad for their love and obedience to the kingdom.
He encouraged them to continue upholding the traditional values and norms of Buganda, and expressed his gratitude to all those who had gathered to celebrate this milestone.
In his concluding remarks, the Kabaka thanked God for the opportunity to address his people, and may God be with you, he said.
