A horrific road accident has claimed the lives of 63 people and left several others injured in the early hours of October 22, 2025, near Kitaleba Village, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.

The tragic incident involved four motor vehicles, including two buses, a lorry, and a Toyota Surf.

According to police reports, the accident occurred at around 12:15 am when the driver of an Isuzu bus (UBF 614X) traveling from Kampala to Gulu attempted to overtake a Tata Lorry (UBK 647C) at the same time another Isuzu bus (UAM 045V) traveling in the opposite direction tried to overtake the Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07).

The two buses collided head-on, causing a chain reaction that led to other vehicles losing control and overturning several times.

The victims, all occupants of the involved vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene or at nearby hospitals. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

The rescue efforts were led by police and emergency services, who worked tirelessly to free trapped passengers and provide medical assistance.

The cause of the accident is believed to be a result of reckless overtaking by one or both bus drivers. SP Kananura Michael, CLO/PRO Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the incident, stating that the police are currently investigating the incident and are working to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

The authorities urge drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic rules to avoid such devastating incidents.
