Dr. Kizza Besigye, Uganda’s veteran opposition leader, has been remanded to Luzira Prison after the General Court Martial adjourned his case until December 2, 2024.
He faces charges, alongside colleague Hajji Obed Lutale, of unlawful possession of two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition.
In court, Besigye protested the military trial, stating, “I object to the court of the military because I am not a member of the UPDF, and I ask that I be tried in a civilian court if I have committed any offence.”
The prosecution alleges the offences occurred in Nairobi, Kenya, Athens, Greece, and Geneva, Switzerland.
Besigye’s troubles with the law are not new. As a four-time presidential candidate, he has been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
His political career has been marked by periods of exile, arrest, and detention. This recent development has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for his release.
The charges against Besigye have been met with skepticism by his supporters, who claim that the government is trying to silence him.
The international community has also expressed concern over Besigye’s treatment, urging the Ugandan authorities to respect his human rights.
As the case unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how the court handles Besigye’s request to be tried in a civilian court.
